Weekly Dietitian Tip: Salt

February is National Heart Health Month!

Salt is a major ingredient of concern when it comes to heart health. The American Heart Association tells us that too much sodium can lead to headaches, bloating and puffiness, weight gain, and over time can also increase the risk for heart diseases such as high blood pressure, kidney disease, osteoporosis, and stomach cancer.

Find your salt recommendation below:

  • Healthy adult without heart disease: no more than 2,300 mg a day (Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 and American Heart Association)
  • Adult with heart disease: no more than 1,500 mg a day (American Heart Association)
